Bartali won by 26 minutes in 1948. Rene Vietto– France's King of the Hill After the war, Vietto was one of the few surviving members of the old guard. For awhile, it looked like Vietto might win the 1947 race. Although he didn't win, he became the Tour's king of the mountains. It's been said that wherever there were steep roads and thin air, Vietto was right there. "It's true that he won the Tour of Lombardy but he didn't have the reputation as a rider capable of challenging in the biggest races, capable of a podium finish in the Tour de France," Leblanc said. In the midst of this controversy, Armstrong wins again. Armstrong continues stronger than ever, winning in 2003, and 2004. In 2005 Armstrong now cycles for an unheard of seventh win. The Tour De France Tragedy
Fabio Casartelli, like many young cyclists, dreamed of achieving infamy in the Tour de France. Unfortunately, in an unprecedented bike crash, Casartelli lost his life and remains only the third rider to ever die during the Tour de France race. Fabio Casartelli was born in Como, Italy in August of 1970. Throughout his amateur cycling career, he showed a lot of potential, most notably with his win of a gold medal in the road race event of the 1992 Olympic Games. He finished one second ahead of the Netherlands" Erik Dekker, who went on to win four stages of the Tour de France in his own career.The first Tour de France Casartelli competed in was in 1993, although Casartelli didn't accomplish much in his debut. For the 1995 Tour de France, Team Motorola selected Casartelli to competed in the race, and Casartelli was hoping to improve upon his first appearance in the legendary race.
Casartelli was in the 15th stage of the 1995 Tour de France when he was suddenly involved in a crash with several other riders. The crash occurred during the descent on the Col de Portet d"Aspet in the Pyrenees. During the crash, Casartelli struck his head on the concrete blocks that lined the roadway, immediately causing him to lose consciousness. Sadly, Casartelli didn't make it to the hospital, as he stopped breathing during the helicopter flight and couldn't be resuscitated.
After Casartelli's tragic death, there was some speculation that his life could have been saved, had he been wearing a bicycle helmet at the time of the accident. However, the senior doctor of the Tour de France, Gerard Porte, refuted such claims, as he said that the helmet would not have covered the area of Casartelli's head where he received the damage that led to his death.If anything positive could be taken from Casartelli's untimely death, it was the way the riders participating in the 1995 Tour de France came together after the tragic crash. In tribute to Fabio Casartelli, his comrades in Team Motorola finished the next stage as a unit, crossing the finish line together. The rest of the pack finished right after, riding slowly in a show of respect to their fallen peer.Fabio Casartelli left behind a wife and an infant son, and cyclists and the Tour de France officials themselves made sure they weren't forgotten. A fund was established for Casartelli's family, and all of the riders who received money for their participation and performances in the 'tribute" stage donated their prize money to the fund. Still a relatively new incarnation, Hardcourt Bike Polo originated in Seattle in the early 2000s by a cyclist introduced to traditional Bike Polo, reports Bikes Direct. Without regular access to turfed areas, Seattle players took to the pavement. Soon Hardcourt Bike Polo emerged as its own sport, adds Bikes Direct, still bearing traces of its roots in traditional bike polo but distinct enough to be recognized as its own entity. As Hardcourt Bike Polo spread to other cities, each city contributed its own unique aspect to the sport. As such, Bikes Direct points out that Hardcourt Bike Polo represents the diversity of its players, and Bikes Direct is happy to see that it has been emerging within the fixie community in its own hometown. Hardcourt Bike Polo games can be played on any paved surface, from parking lot to outdoor basketball court to street. Bikes Direct explains that the game consists of two teams, each with three players. Players use handcrafted mallets, similar in appearance to croquet mallets. Players hit a plastic ball into the opposing team's goal area, and contact is not prohibited between players on opposing teams, notes Bikes Direct. If you are new to cycling, rather take it slowly and build up your strength and stamina over time, and your cycling experience will be a far more enjoyable one.Tip Number 1:Cycling takes a lot out of you, so within twenty minutes of completing a hard cycle, rehydrate yourself and eat something nourishing, or you will feel sluggish and will be ravenous later on. An energy or a protein drink will make you feel like new again.Take extra vitamin C and E as these will help to repair muscles and abrasions if you happen to have a fall. In the mornings, make sure to eat breakfast. A nutritious cereal is normally best, and it will help to stop unhealthy cravings throughout the day. If you eat well, you will perform better.Tip Number 2:
Even if you have never had an accident, replace your helmet as you need too. Your helmet does get worn out. Most manufactures recommend replacing it after about seven years, but it could be sooner if you are an avid cyclist. Factors such as sun exposure, cracks, and loss of form of the foam on the inside are all points to take into consideration.Tip Number 3:Use grease rather than oil on your chain. This is particularly true of mountain bikes where you ride through a lot of mud. The grease will last a lot longer than oil. Try mounting a 'Crud Claw' onto your cassette as this helps to scrap the mud out of your gears. Spray with Pam or WD-40 to stop the mud from building up on your bicycle.Tip Number 4:If you want to avoid a seized seat post, the best thing you can do is to grease the seat post, stem and bottom bracket often. Sealed bottom brackets can seize too, and this is a costly experience. Try wrapping a piece of electrical tape around your post and stem to mark the position, then remove them and wipe them down. Grease them and reinsert. You can avoid expensive problems later on if you do this every six months. Your bottom brackets should also be removed and cleaned once in a while, especially if you sweat a lot or ride in the rain.Your spoke nipples will need a good oil about once a year. Put a drop of oil on every spoke nipple where the nipple meets the rim and where the spoke meets the nipple, working your way around the wheel slowly.
